When old insulation should be removed before spray foam
- It was soaked by a roof leak or storm damage
- It's stained, moldy or smells musty
- Rodents or other pests have nested in it
- You're encapsulating the roof deck and want a clean attic floor
How insulation removal works
Crews use a large vacuum to pull loose and blown-in insulation out of the attic into bags or a collection unit outside. Batts are bagged by hand. The attic is then cleaned before foam is applied.
Insulation removal and spray foam pricing
Removal adds labor and disposal to the job. Ask for it to be listed as its own line on the estimate. See our spray foam cost guide.

Spray foam insulation questions
Do I always need to remove old insulation?
Not always. If you're foaming the roof deck and the old insulation is clean and dry, some homeowners leave it. Wet or soiled insulation should come out.
Is old insulation removal messy?
Crews seal off the work area and vacuum material straight outside, so the mess stays contained.
