Spray foam for enclosed crawl spaces
Some homes in the area have a crawl space enclosed by a brick or block foundation wall rather than open piers. These spaces trap humid air and often smell musty. Encapsulating the crawl space means sealing it from outside air, insulating the walls, and covering the ground with a vapor barrier.
What a spray foam crawl space job includes
- Closed-cell foam on the foundation walls and rim joists
- A heavy vapor barrier over the ground, sealed at the seams and walls
- Sealing vents and openings to the outside
- Often a dehumidifier to keep the space dry
Open piers or enclosed crawl space?
If your home sits on open piers with no wall around the bottom, the right job is foam under the floor instead. See under-floor spray foam for raised homes.
Termite note: codes in heavy-termite areas like ours limit foam near the ground so inspectors can see the foundation. Ask your installer how they will leave an inspection gap. See spray foam and termites.

Spray foam insulation questions
Do I need a dehumidifier after encapsulation?
Many encapsulated crawl spaces in humid climates use one. Your installer will recommend what fits your home.
Can I encapsulate if water comes in during heavy rain?
Drainage problems should be fixed first. Foam and vapor barriers don't stop flooding.
